Harmeet Sooden

I haven't written about Harmeet Sooden, and the other CPTs missing in Iraq, because I've got nothing to say, it's just such an awful situation, and it must be so horrendous for those captured, and their family and friends.

But I thought I'd link to the vigil information - in case anyone in Auckland didn't know it was on.

The Christian Peacemaker Team website is also worth looking at.

yes it is an awful situation and I hope the prisoners get a reprieve. They are unquestionably brave and principled.

    I think their mission:
" to expose abusive acts by U.S. Armed Forces and support Iraqis committed to nonviolent resistance." is well intentioned, but inadequate for the situation. Non violent resistance to the US occupation is not enough to eject the US invaders from Iraq. The Iraqi people have the right to defend themselves by force of arms and that deserves support just as much as non violent resistance.

  2. I agree and disagree.

My standard for supporting resistance is pretty high, but has nothing to do with violence or non-violence. I want to know how resistance groups treat people around them, and what they want to create. Without that I can't support any group.

But that's actually pretty meaningless, because there's nothing I can do to support Iraqi resistance except say "I support this resistance". I'm on the other side of the world, I have no contacts, I'm sure there's not a single Iraqi who cares whether I support them or not.

I believe in self-determination, and Iraqi people will determine the path of their resistance, whether or not I support them.

But if there are people who are prepared to act on their commitment to ending the war on Iraq then I'm not going to criticise them for having a different criteria for support than I do.
