212

I've been reading Living at the Cutting Edge Women's Experiences of Protection Orders. I might have something to say about it in the next few days. But now all I can write about is the dedication.

The report is dedicated to the 212 women and children who have died in domestic violence homicides since the new law was passed in 1995.

The dedication has the names and ages (where known) of each of those 212 people.

As I read the list, and I read all the names, there were some names I recognised. There were some children, and fewer women, whose deaths had made the news. But there were far I'd never heard of, who were murdered and that was it.

It's so sad. Society cloaks this horror and just seems to want to pretend it doesn't happen.

    Did you see this too?

Things are not good for women and children.

Drop in percentage of sex assault cases ending in conviction

    Wed, 29 Aug 2007 04:16p.m.

National says urgent action is needed to stop a slide in the number of sexual violence cases ending in a conviction.

The party has obtained figures showing the percentage of sexual violence cases netting a conviction has dropped to about 45-percent.

It was 63 percent in 1990, and of over 1100 sex cases brought last year just 510 resulted in convictions being entered.

Spokesman Chester Borrows says that will cause sexual assault victims to lose confidence that it is worth while coming forward.
